The Apostle Paul writes about an out-of-body experience. In his
epistle to the Corinthians, we read:
"I know a man in Christ who fourteen
years ago-whether in the body I do not know, or out of the body I do
not know, God knows--such a man was caught up to the third heaven.
And I know how such a man--whether in the body or apart from the
body I do not know, God knows--was caught up into Paradise, and
heard inexpressible words, which a man is not permitted to speak"
(2 Cor. 12:2-4).
Paul then reveals that he received a revelation from God during
this experience and notes the importance of being humble.
"Because of the surpassing greatness of
the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself,
there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to
buffet me--to keep me from exalting myself" (2
Cor. 12:7).
The Apostle Paul apparently received this revelation through an
out-of-body experience.
Are other examples of out-of-body experiences recorded in the
Bible? The inference in Revelation 4:1 is that the Apostle John may
also have had an out-of-body experience in receiving the book of
Revelation.
"After these things, I looked, and
behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I
had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said,
"Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after
these things" (Rev. 4:1).
In the Old Testament, we find the examples of Enoch and Elijah,
who according to the biblical story never tasted of death but were
taken to heaven by God. Could Enoch and Elijah have had an
out-of-body experience? These stories may relate the possibility of
at least four recorded biblical stories involving out-of-body
experiences.
